Why would your hair turn grey?

When your hair grows, the hair would be coloured depending on the melanin levels. There are two types of melanin colours, yellow and black so depending on the mix, your hair colour will be determined. For the Japanese, they usually have higher levels of melanin (black) in their hair so their hair is generally black. The place where melanin is produced is in your scalp where melanocyte cells are present. If blood circulation is weak, the cells are not able to produce enough melanin since the melanocyte cells will die off, resulting in the greying of the hair.

The causes of grey hair

There are genetic reasons for the greying of hair but with age, the cells would weaken too. When the number of healthy cells decrease, there is a higher chance of grey hair appearing.　With stress, your autonomic nerves would be messed up and therefore result in greying of the hair. There is a tendency for grey hair to accumulate in spots when the root cause is stress. One would also be able to tell the condition of the body by simply looking at the spots where grey hair is accumulating. For example, if we were to bunch the hair up at the top of the head and grey hair is spotted, it could reflect intestinal problems and if the grey hair is spotted at the back of the head, it might mean irregularities in one's menstrual cycle or reproductive function might be present. If we remove genetics and old age then there is a chance that the black hair would be reverted.

What should you do if you spot grey hair?

There is no scientific proof that grey hair would increase if one were to pull them out. However, the scalp would be weakened when you pull the grey hair out so the melanocyte cells cannot work as effectively, hence resulting in grey hair. Furthermore, when you pull out the hair from its roots, you damage the pores and can reduce the chances of new hair growth. The best way to go about removing grey hair would be to snip it off with a pair of scissors at the hair roots or to colour the hair. With the absence of melanin, colouring your hair would not be able to cover the grey hairs. Usually grey hair-colouring methods would result in damage of the hair and therefore a manicure-like approach would be more ideal when it comes to covering grey hair.
