The different types of shampoo and how to select them

As previously brought up, there are many types of shampoos but each shampoo also has its own formulas with different ingredients. Therefore it would be the most effective when one chooses the shampoo that complements both their scalp and hair. Please let us introduce and explain to you how you can select a better shampoo for yourself and perhaps this would help you to think thoroughly before purchasing a new shamp

Types of shampoo and its features

Generally speaking, there are 3 main types of shampoo

Amino Acid-based Shampoos

Amino Acid-based shampoos are those that has its cleaning ingredients using the components from the Amino Acid base. The main feature of this shampoo is that it will give both your hair a natural and gentle finish! Such types of shampoo can reduce the chances of over-washing your hair and scalp such that it gets too clean (because there should still be a moderate amount of sebum retained in your hair for the shine), resulting in a minimum level of damage for your hair and scalp.

These types of shampoo is best recommended for people with sensitive scalps and for those experiencing hair loss. However, some people may not like it as they might think that the cleaning power of Amino Acid-based shampoos is too weak for their liking. Fret not, because double-shampooing your hair with this shampoo as a habit is definitely not a problem!

The ingredient to look out for is called Lauroyl or Cocoyl.

Soap-based Shampoos

Soap-based shampoos are as the name goes - the cleaning ingredients in this shampoo would be the same ingredient used to soaps. The main feature of this shampoo is that it is alkaline and therefore the cleaning power is very strong. As such, right after washing, one may feel that the hair is very parched and it spreads out with a lack of sebum. This is due to the strong alkaline since it would open up all the cuticles in the hair once you use it as your shampoo. One way to get rid of the parchy feel is to counter the shampoo with an acidic rinse to neutralise the ingredients that go onto your hair. Nonetheless, the soap-based shampoo would be relatively beneficial to one's skin too!

The ingredients in this kind of shampoo would be either labelled as Soap-based or Fatty Acid.

High Alcohol-based Shampoos

It was previously known as petrolum-based shampoos, but since the base ingredients have been switched to raw materials from plants, it is now referred to broadly as Alcohol-based shampoos. Generally the shampoos that are sold commercially under this category would provide a strong cleaning power with the properties of self-restoration as well as a soothing finish while preventing the hair from being too slippery.

However, as the cleaning power from this type of shampoo is quite strong, those who are concerned about sensitive scalps/skins as well as losing hair should be cautious of such types of shampoo as it may aggravate the condition.

The ingredients in this shampoo are often labelled as Lauryl, Laureth or Sulfuric Acid.

Silicon Shampoo & Non-Silicon Shampoo

Recently we have seen an increase in the public wanting to know more about what these two names are - and as the name goes, it just means whether the shampoo has silicon included inside the ingredients or not.

What is silicon shampoo?

Most shampoos sold commercially have silicon in their ingredients. The good thing about silicon is that it gives the hair a coating (like wax) and when one touches their hair, their fingers would pass through their hair easily. However, as there is a coat, it might end up as residue on the hair and in the pores, resulting in a greater chance of hair loss or sensitive scalps. Therefore, if you would like to use silicon-based shampoos, then it would be highly recommended that you firmly wash off the shampoo from your hair to prevent such problems from arising.

What is non-silicon based shampoo?

As the name goes, such shampoos do not have silicon as part of their ingredients and the pros and cons of such shampoos is the direct opposite of silicon-based shampoos. Such shampoos are also referred to as medicated shampoos, with the abilities of preventing hair loss and encouraging hair growth. As such, the damages and adverse effects of non-silicon shampoos can be said to be the least. On the other hand, the price for non-silicon shampoos are pretty expensive compared to the usual silicon-based shampoos. As for the touch after using non-silicon shampoos would feel flaky because of the lack of silicon to provide a coating, using a conditioner would solve this problem.

So, which shampoo should I choose?

Out of all the shampoos commercially available, silicon-based shampoos are the most cost-effective while providing a good touch/finish for the hair. However, when taking into consideration your hair, non-silicon based shampoos are defnitely more recommended than the usual silicon-based shampoos. For those with hair loss or sensitive scalp problems, if there is a constant usage of silicon-based shampoo, this would probably worsen the current state of the problem. For those with thinning hair, using silicon-based shampoos could also be the root/main cause of it as well.
