Enough about hair trends and hairstyles! Today we will be going slightly off topic!

There was a Hair Seminar held on Monday and Tuesday by Matsunaga Hideki and Urban Hair Care, and one of Artnoise Hair Salon’s baito, also yours truly was there as a translator!

I gotta say I took this job without fully understanding what I was signing up for.. I was told it was a simple translation job but guess who was wrong and had to study several weeks before the job and was honestly still not good enough.

The seminar included a haircut lecture and hands on workshop both by Matsunaga Hideki, and a Tokio Inkarami lecture. The first day was extremely nervewrecking as it was my first time on a proper translating job. (The work here at Artnoise hair salon is a piece of cake in comparison) As Japanese and English are so different as languages, it was pretty tough translating a whole lecture to an audience of 60 people.

There can be concepts that makes complete sense in Japanese, however it was so difficult to translate it into English due to the different sentence structures and there are some words that exists in Japanese but there is not an exact word for it in English (it could also be due to my limited vocabulary)

There were definitely times where I could not understand what was being said in Japanese, and I simply had to ask for it to be repeated once more or have it rephrased with easier words. Thankfully, everyone including the audience was very nice and patient with me.

After the first day, I got feedback that my translations were not clear and I should speak slower, clearer and use simpler words. This made me realized that the translations should not only make sense to me, but I have to phrase it in a way that is easily comprehandible by the audience.

The second day was much easier as I understood the flow of the whole day and I was much calmer.

In total, Matsunaga San taught the audience 4 haircuts in total. While listening to him, I actually learnt alot. For example, how important it is to look at a customer’s head structure, the amount of hair they have at each part of the head, even the ears need to be taken note of. Very small areas such as the way you use a comb, the way you stand, the amount of time spent at each section of the head, never forgetting to clear stray hairs off a customers’s face after a haircut etc. It even went beyond a customer’s appointment but taking into consideration the kind of industry a customer is in, plans he/she may have after this hair appointment, how he/she is going to style her hair the next day etc

Hairstylists should never create a haircut for him/herself but always create something that their customer wants. Only after establishing a sense of trust, then can a hairstylist create a hairstyle that he/she wants to see on a customer.

After hearing the detailed thought process Matsunaga San goes through, I understood why he is such a big deal in Japan.

Even though I am not in the same hairstyling industry, being able to listen to his lecture was a huge eye opener. It was very interesting to learn more about a different industry and I think many of us forget how skillful hairstylists actually are.

Besides learning about the beauty industry, this seminar was a great opportunity to network with people. I do not have any intention of joining the industry, but it was simply fun getting to know more people.

It was a very fruitful experience! I learnt alot, it was a great confidence booster and I realized there is still soooooo much for me to learn.
