Hair FAQ: Why We Use Carbonated Water

How is everybody this fine Tuesday? This counter staff is feeling quite happy because it has been a rare peaceful work day, which means she can hit KPIs earlier and go home on time for once.

For today’s post, we will be taking a break from the (mostly ash) colours of our clients’ glorious hair pictures, and have a short eDuCaCiOnALLL segment on salon-related things again – this time, on the oft-overlooked little fella known as carbonated water!

What Is Carbonated Water

Like soft drinks, carbonated water is water with carbon dioxide dissolved into it under pressure. According to Wikipedia, it is also very widely known by its other name of ‘sparkling water’.

For those of you who have retained some of your science knowledge from all those ten-year-series questions, you’d likely remember that carbon dioxide is not exactly thaaaat soluble in water (it is a little bit. Just a little bit). This is why high pressure is needed, so that enough of it can be dissolved into water to create the entity known as carbonated water. When that pressure is released, the carbon dioxide immediately escapes from the water into the air, creating effervescence – this release of air is part of the reason behind the refreshing feeling you get when drinking sot drinks.

Is Carbonated Water Good for My Hair?

Here at Art-Noise, the water that we use to wash your hair is carbonated water. The reason for that is, of course, because ~~it’s to set our salon apart because you need to differentiate to compete in this saturated market and also~~ it’s good for your hair!

According to one explanation I got from stylist Shuji, carbonated water helps to improve blood circulation to your scalp and hair roots. The way it does this is through a sort of negative feedback effect – the release of carbon dioxide onto your scalp when carbonated water run through your hair triggers signals for the body to send more oxygen to your scalp, which in turn promotes better blood and oxygen flow to that part of your head. Improving blood and oxygen flow to your scalp and roots also better enable your hair to absorb nutrients from products during treatments, thereby allowing treatments and products to have greater effect!

According, also, to stylist Shuji, the water we use here is also of a slightly alkaline nature ~~(tbvh though, I don’t quite get how water with carbon dioxide dissolved in it can be alkaline bt I am not the expert here)~~, which has greater gunk removal power than regular water, as hair is slightly acidic by nature, and rinsing water of an opposing nature to it better enables gunk to be removed from it. This higher exfoliating power, combined with the improved blood and oxygen flow, is the reason why your head often feels very refreshed after a good wash at our salon! 😀
