What Art-Noise means to me

the most useful/money-making skill i have at the moment is undoubtably my japanese-speaking ability. there’s a substantial demand in singapore and i get slightly higher pay per hour than other similar jobs that don’t require japanese, so as a chronic part-timer (until my full time job starts, anyway!) this is great.

every now and then i get asked if i’m interested to do this part-time job or that and before i joined art-noise, i would probably have said yes in a heartbeat. and as a rather anal-retentive person i always have plenty of bad things to say about every job i take. the pay was too low or the organisation was terrible or the efficiency was poor or i’m so glad it’s over. it was like that for my previous long-term part-time job, which is why i was so delighted to leave.

i’ve been working at art-noise since november last year and when i start full-time work in april i will be so sad to leave. not that i don’t complain occasionally but it’s not with the same vitriol. “we need to be more on-the-ball with emails” “so if you say that in english it should be like this” “the next time you go to the bank bring your ID” — i say these things and i actively work on them because i really love the people at art-noise. they’re all so warm and kind and determined to do good by their customers; i see that and i can’t help but want to, well, help them. it’s not hard to tell that everyone has their customers’ best interests at heart; even when i get frustrated because a customer is being confusing or can’t make up their mind, the stylists always insist on listening carefully and making sure the customer knows exactly how their hair is going to be cut/permed/coloured before they begin. hiroe’s deft fingers always amaze me with how they precisely pick out portions of hair to perm and create beautiful waves and volume, while daisuke’s frank and friendly attitude means i always end up translating his sometimes slightly cold jokes to the customers lol. kanako is very good at styling hair to match your face while making the best use of your current hair quality/condition, and even though she only arrived in feb, she’s already turned many a customer into dashing young men and gorgeous women. yukie is great with short hair and never fails to make customers feel comfortable – i will really miss her when she returns to japan this week!!!! come back soon yukie-san~~~ T___T she’s also the one who dyed my hair for CNY, putting in more red and bleaching selectively to create an overall soft pink effect!

up til now, i’ve always been slightly afraid of hair salons: from my experience they’re cold places, where a haircut is reduced to a monetary transaction in exchange for bare-minimum service, where everyone has sharp faces and cool styles and really if you know me i’m not a cool person at all, i’m all over the place and i like cat prints and what have you >_> at art-noise i really feel at home, relaxed, and free to be myself. i’m always motivated to go the extra mile, and not even because i know it’s the extra mile, but just because i naturally feel it needs to be done – i can’t help but want to put my all into making art-noise even more awesome than it already is, and to see it grow and mature and find its place in singapore. i hope you get the chance to visit and get to know and love the art-noise family as much as i do!
