Japanese versus Singaporean

Having worked at the salon for a while now, there are a few things that have surprised me about how Singaporeans take care (or possibly don’t…?) of their hair.

First up is the belief that letting wet hair dry naturally is better for the hair. Most of our customers that I’ve met are surprised to know that this actually damages your hair more than blow drying it. Remember to use a blow dryer no matter how much of a burden it may be!

Speaking of burdens, I’m surprised by how little Singaporeans do up their hair. The majority just keep it down or tie it up in a ponytail. I find that Japanese girls are usually more experimental and adventurous in finding ways to jazz up their hair, whether it be the style itself (e.g. high buns, braids) or the decorations they use to secure the hair (e.g. scrunchies, ribbons, what have you).

I appreciate the fact that Singaporeans keep things simple since I am a very lazy bummer myself and settle for a ponytail most of the time. The only problem is that when I actually want/need to dress up it’s incredibly hard to find cute hair decorations in Singapore. All the shopping needs to be done in Japan, which inevitably drills a hole through my purse :'( Come on Singapore!
