Is ammonia bad?

Hello one, hello all, it is midweek. which means we are halfway through this hell and left with 2 more days till another temporary weekend reprieve!

In line with our newest, unofficial mission statement to make INFORMED CONSUMERS out of all of you, our esteemed customers, today’s instalment of Frequently Asked Questions will be about a very essential but also highly misunderstood little chemical in the hair industry – ammonia!

These days, with the organic beauty and cosmetics industry booming and expanding everywhere, we’ve been getting this query quite a lot from our customers: are your products ammonia-free?

The answer is, no. (I checked it out myself; most of the stuff on our colouring/perming/rebonding shelves contain ammonia)

Ammonia often has quite a bad rep amongst consumers due to its smell and the sting that sometimes accompanies colouring sessions. According to our stylists here at Art-Noise, however, that pungent fragrance and slight pain may not always be a bad thing.

The cause of the smell during colouring is because of the release of ammonia gas, an irritant, during the process. Ammonia is often present in most priming agents for colouring, perming, and rebonding in the form of ammonia salts such as ammonia hydroxide (NH4-OH). When these salts react with alkali, small amounts of ammonia gas (NH3) are released as by-products. While this by-product is a little irritating on the nose, its presence (le smell) also means that less alkali will be left in your hair, as most of it will have been reacted away. A small amount of heat is also released from the reaction as a side product, which is what causes the slight sting on your scalp when the colouring reagents have been applied too close or onto your scalp!

While it is indeed true that such unpleasant experiences can be avoided by using ammonia-free products, our stylists have actually told us that it may not be very good for your hair in the long run, as ammonia-free products tend to wash out completely less well compared to ammonia-based products, which may in turn result in gunk accumulation over time, and render your hair stiffer and less capable of absorbing nutrients and reagents.
