So as you can see from this picture, this is a very direct and simple brown bob style. The point to note here, in this otherwise simple picture, would be the use of glorious evening sunlight to emphasise the colour. Natural light is the best filter guise. Trust Nature.

Because stylist Shuji at our hair salon commented that a simple brown colour would make too “boring” a post, moi will now take the liberty to throw in a little extra factoid/hair care lesson here. This might be relevant information for those of y’all who travel frequently, so buckLE DOWN FOR CLASS FOLKS!

‘Hard’ water vs ‘Soft’ water

Today’s extra class will be on the difference between ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ water! Some of you might be familiar with these terms often used to describe the quality of water in different countries! But what exactly, you may ask, is the difference between the two?

According to Google-sensei, the ‘hardness’ of water is determined by the level of naturally occurring calcium and magnesium compounds in your water; high content classifies water as hard, and low traces of the compounds make water soft. Tap water in the UK, for instance, tends to have a high content of chalk and lime (both calcium deriavatives), therefore making it ‘hard’. Such water, when drunk straight from the tap, tends to not go down the throat very smoothly, due to the relatively high content of heavy impurities in it. This counter staff has heard that hard water tends to be more prevalent in Europe, though as someone who has never travelled there before, I cannot verify this.

Soft water, on the other hand, tends to have lower concentrations of those heavy calcium and magnesium compounds, thus making it lighter, purer, and easier to down when drunk. Japan’s tap water, as well as our local tap water would be classified as such.

Washing your Hair with ‘Hard’ Water VS with ‘Soft’ Water

As you can probably guess, in terms of which would be better for your hair, ‘soft’ water definitely wins out. ‘Soft’ water’s lower impurity content allows it to have both better rinsing power, and help shampoos and soaps lather better, in turn allowing for more thorough cleansing. The lower content of easily-caught-and-retained-in-hair calcium compounds in ‘soft’ water also means that less residue and gunk would be left in your hair and on your scalp after washing, thus allowing for better air circulation and nutrient absorption by your hair! If you happen to have any experience of going to Japan or any other country with really clean and good water, you might have noticed a distinct improvement in the condition of your hair during your trip – this is one of the reasons for it!

So What Do I Do If I Am Travelling to a ‘Hard’ Water Country?

Getting a good shampoo would be highly recommended! For those of you who travel regularly, and who might be concerned with the potential effect the quality of water may have on your hair and scalp’s health, it is recommended that y’all get a good shampoo to bring along, so that even if the water is not as good as water at home, at least you have a good shampoo to offset its effects!
