yesterday we had a customer who had black box dyed, rebonded hair who came in for highlights/balayage! sadly it was not possible for her and here’s why

Have you ever wondered what makes box dye so bad? Let’s unpack this! To put it as simply as I can, the difference between a box & a pro tube of color comes down to what’s in it. When you come to a salon, your stylist has a whole range of colors & developers that range in different levels of ammonia & other chemicals used to lift/color the hair. With a box, they want as many people as possible to get “results” so they put the HIGHEST levels of these chemicals. This means even if you use black or a dark color, they’re using the same chemicals made to lighten the hair, which you DONT need, especially when you’re going dark. What happens after that color is in your hair? Because the chemicals are stronger, they’re jammed way harder in to your hair & end up staining your hair at its core. Imagine I dump a latte & a cup of plain coffee onto a white carpet. Which one is going to come out easier? The more diluted one, NOT the stronger one! Now let’s talk about goals! We’ve all gone dark to turn around & want to go light again. That’s OK!! But let’s go back to the carpet. If I dump 1 cup of coffee on the carpet, it may never be pure white again, but we could get it close over time. NOW imagine I dump 5 cups of coffee over the same piece of carpet & just let it sit. Have fun cleaning it then! This applies with hair too. I’ve seen miracles work & I’ve gotten people light eventually with box in their hair. But this takes a lot of time and a lot of $$$! These people tend to be extremely serious about their goal & are willing to cut their hair, pay a lot of $ and spend a lot of time with me. If you’re unwilling to do those things, let’s have a reasonable goal! Reds, caramel, different shades of brown & dark purple are more reasonable AND super beautiful!! They may take a session or 2, but at least it’s within REASON for you & your stylist. Blondes don’t have the most fun! Healthy hair does!

One of the most common color corrections is removing black box dye. DO NOT expect to be blonde after 1 session! It will not happen and it's not the stylist's fault, we are limited to the canvas you bring us. I started lifting the black with #blondor by @wellahair and @olaplex. I let it sit in foil for about an hour. I then lifted her natural level 6 and let it all sit for another 30 minutes. I was able to leave the bleach in her hair this long because of #olaplex and only using 20 vol developer. You CAN get rid of the black dye completely, but it will take few sessions, a couple of hundred $'s and losing some length. With nearly 3,000 saves and over 10,000 s, this update post from @marissapusateri shows the ugly side of lifting black box dye #beautylaunchpad • The band is from a black permanent hair color that was colored 2 years ago…Hair color is in your hair until you 1) Bleach it out or 2) Cut it off. Even if it fades it’s still there. The truth comes out with lightener lol. The band was bleached for a total of 4 times within 2 hair appointments. Taking fine tiny sections+ 20 volume, and carefully applying to just the darker areas to avoid overlapping on the already bleach blonde ends+the level 8/9 virgin top half of her hair. Bands are scary and intimidating but stay calm and be confident. You know what you’re doing. It takes time to achieve the best lift in a healthy way. No heat was used during this entire process, just foils+patience. One more session and we will achieve her hair goal . CLIENTS- Trust us when we say going blonde is a process. Also not a pretty one in most cases. Especially if your goal is a platinum/ashy/silver blonde. It can take time, $$$, and awkward phases.

It’s all about managing expectations, isn’t it? @alexisdidmyhair #beautylaunchpad • S T R A N D T E S T I require a strand test for each new client that has ever used dark PERMANENT dye! ~ A STRAND TEST WILL SHOW US: – how your hair will lift in 1 session – where your permanent dye starts/ends – if your hair goals are possible – if your hair is strong enough to handle 1 round of bleach ~ On this client’s ends, they are a lot darker than the top section! Her ends had layers of box dye which doesn’t lift as easily as her virgin hair on top ~ If you refer her strand test to the swatches next to it, then you can see how many levels she needs to be lifted to get to a level 10 blonde. She started with level 1 black but her ends only lifted to about a level 6 dark orange ~ Think twice before grabbing that black box dye!
