Hair Care 101: On Dandruff and Scalp Dryness

G’day one, g’day all. Welcome to another episode of shameless product advertising, featuring some useful hair advice.

Our very studious! hardworking! skilled! and highly experienced resident stylist Shuji shared an article he recently read with me today, and it featured some useful advice on identifying and dealing with dandruff problems, so we will sharing this new info with all of you in this blog post!

Dandruff and dry scalp are common problems among many locals, but do you know the difference between the two? According to an article in h4ufme magazine, a trade hair magazine, dandruff can be caused by dry scalp, but by and far, the two are fairly unrelated conditions.

Dry Scalp

If you are prone to dry skin, you will likely also be prone to dry scalp (your scalp is, after all, essentially just another part of your skin). People with more sensitive skin, or skin conditions such as eczema, are also more likely to experience dry scalp, as their skin tends to dry out/get irritated more easily. This also means that things that tend to dry out your skin, will also have the same effect on your scalp – excessive washing is one such example.

Dandruff

Dandruff are essentially dead skin cells, and the condition we call dandruff is the result of what happens when the process of shedding dead skin from your scalp speeds up. This speeding of shedding can be caused by a variety of factors, including but not limited to: 1) sensitive reactions to certain hair products or their component ingredients, 2) oils secreted by the scalp, and 3) fungal infections.

The Difference

People with dry scalp can experience flaking, which is a condition that looks similar to dandruff, but is actually not dandruff. Flakes from scalp dryness, according to the h4ufme article, is usually whiter and smaller than true dandruff flakes, which tend to look more yellow and oily. It’s a bit like the difference in your nails actually – freshly grown out nails tend to look a bit whiter, while older nails, being the well-seasoned, well-weathered keratin bits that they are, tend to be a bit more on the yellow side.

So how should I treat this?

For flaking caused by dry scalp, the problem can generally be fairly quickly resolved by taking care to avoid doing things that will cause one’s scalp to dry out. Measures include washing your hair on alternate days (excessive washing often removes much-needed sebum, which is useful in locking in moisture, from your scalp, in turn causing your scalp to become more prone to dryness!), and taking care to reduce your scalp’s exposure to harmful UV rays (umbrellas, umbrellas, umbrellas! Get a good one with UV protection! For those of you who like to Taobao/Ezbuy, you can search for 天堂伞s [reading: tian tang umbrellas] on there. They’re real good on the UV protection side – tried, tested, and proven by this humble counter staff’s very good, ridiculously fair, and sunburn-prone friend ;D)

For actual dandruff, treatment will vary depending on the root cause of your dandruff issues. Generally speaking, regularly using a good anti-dandruff shampoo is usually sufficient to curb most causes of dandruff, including minor fungal infections, but if your problems persist still, a consultation with a medical specialist might be in order.
